Enhancing Patient Safety: Overview of the INS 2024 Non-Antineoplastic Vesicant List and Resources

The Greater Ohio Vascular Access Network (GOVAN) is proud to host an exclusive educational event focused on non-antineoplastic vesicants—a crucial but often overlooked topic in infusion therapy and vascular access.

This session will be presented by Barb Nickel, APRN-CNS, CCRN, CRNI, a Clinical Nurse Specialist with extensive expertise in critical care, infusion therapy, and vascular access. A recognized leader in evidence-based practice, Ms. Nickel has chaired both the 2024 and 2027 INS Standards of Practice Committees and serves as an Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University, Australia.

Why Attend?

Vesicant medications, if extravasated, can cause severe tissue injury, leading to long-term complications for patients. While oncology-based vesicant safety is well-documented, non-antineoplastic vesicants are widely used in acute, emergency, and critical care settings, where proactive prevention strategies are essential.

This interactive session will provide attendees with:
✅ A comprehensive understanding of non-antineoplastic vesicants, their risks, and their mechanisms of action.
✅ Three evidence-based preventative strategies to reduce the likelihood of extravasation injuries.
✅ An overview of the INS 2024 Non-Antineoplastic Vesicant List and how to apply it in daily practice to improve patient safety.
